Manny Lawton papers, 1936-1985.

The material in this collection dates from 1936-1985. The papers contain audiotapes, clippings, correspondence, manuscripts, badges / medals, photographs, press releases, scrapbooks, slides, and speeches. The audiotapes contain recordings taken from the Defenders of Bataan and Corregidor annual meetings in Fontana, NC. The clippings contain war related topics such as the Oryoku Maru disaster and the Bataan Death March, as well as stories written about Manny Lawton's career. The correspondence files includes a copy of the May 6, 1942 memoranda sent to Washington, DC announcing that Corregidor had fallen to the Japanese; several POW letters sent from Manny to home, as well as various letters between Manny and his family and friends. The manuscripts contain early drafts of what was to become the published work, "Some Survived." Oversized items include: 11 newspaper articles; 1 scrapbook of clippings that detail the struggles of POW's in Japanese imprisonment. The photographs file includes Clemson cadet photos; surrender of the Japanese in 1945; Bataan Day observances in 1967 and 1982; and Manny receiving the Clemson Alumni Distinguished Service Award in 1985. In addition, there are 90 slides that depict the 1967 Bataan Day observances. There are two POW medical issues files that document various studies involving imprisonment during war. The press releases file contains transcripts of Manny Lawton's appearances on ABC and NBC telecasts. A speech file contains material that Lawton presented to various audiences in 1967, 1969, and the early 1980's. Lastly, two veteran's affairs files contain statistics, legislation, and testimony dated 1979-1982.

Manny Lawton was born on March 5, 1918 in Garnett, SC, the son of Brewton Sams and Marian Smith Lawton. A Clemson alumnus (class of 1940), author, and lecturer, Manny Lawton survived the atrocities of Bataan as a prisoner of war during World War II.
